NAMSUB CHOI is an architectural historian who has surveyed in Kurdistan, Islamic world and Republic of Korea, participated in many academic research and architectural design projects, and documented local cultures and vernacular settlements in various parts of the world that field-surveyed for oneself.

Dr. Choi held a Bachelor of Architecture Planning (2006) and a Master of Architectural History (2008), both conferred by Sungkyunkwan University. His master’s thesis, titled “A Study on the Historical Intervention of Wooden Architecture: Focus on the Depositories of Tripitaka Koreana Woodblocks in Haeinsa Buddhist Temple,” meticulously documented the evolution of the structure, combining detailed architectural measurements with an extensive review of historical sources to propose viable preservation strategies.

Subsequent to his postgraduate studies, Dr. Choi honed his skills in practice as a Junior Architect at Junglim Architecture, a preeminent architectural design firm in South Korea, from 2009 to 2012. His scholarly pursuits also included pivotal contributions to three major academic endeavors aimed at nominating sites for the World Heritage List: the ‘Historic Villages of Korea: Hahoe and Yangdong’ project (2007-2008), the ‘Seowon, Korean Neo-Confucian Academies’ project (2013), and the ‘Sansa, Buddhist Mountain Monasteries in Korea’ project (2015).

Culminating in his academic achievements, Dr. Choi was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy in Architectural History from Seoul National University in 2022. His doctoral dissertation, “The Historical Developments of Kurdish Black Tent and Stone Architecture,” was a seminal work underpinned by rigorous field research across Kurdistan in Iran and Türkiye from 2015 to 2020. It encompasses a comprehensive analysis of various sources ranging from Middle Eastern literature to European travel logs.

In his current research trajectory (2023-2026), Dr. Choi is delving into the intricate connections between Islamic culture and Korean architectural traditions, an inquiry that promises to contribute significantly to the understanding of cultural interrelations in architectural practices.
